Newport, Rhode Island is very much a walking town and offers
areas great for hiking and walking. Most notable for walking
is the scenic Cliffwalk. The other communities of Aquidneck Island,
Portsmouth and Middletown have nature preserves and wild refuges which
are popular spots for bird watching or simply taking in the great outdoors
and picnicking.What to know: The second half of the Cliffwalk is not a finished
trail and can be dangerous if you're not paying attention.
Scenic Cliffwalk: The Cliffwalk
is an absolute must see while in Newport Rhode Island. The first half
of the walk is a finished path. It begins at Memorial Boulevard and
continues behind some incredible estates. The last half of Cliffwalk
is not a finished path at all; careful attention must be paid when
walking this area. Note that are only a few exits off the Cliffwalk.
Ocean Drive: A popular outing
for tourists and residents alike, the Ocean Drive is a beautiful escape.
Roller-bladers and bikers as well as walkers and joggers enjoy the
year round beauty of the Ocean Drive. The house are incredible and
at the half way point is Brenton Point State Park which is a popular
spot for picnicking and kite flying. Stop by the park on a Sunday afternoon
and the sky is filled with kites.
Newport Harborwalk:
The Newport Harborwalk extends from the historic Point Section all
the way to Kings Park in the 5th Ward. Some parts are finished paths,
others are not.
