NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND SHOPPING
Upper Thames Street - Newport RI
Thames Street begins at the intersection of Thames and Farewell Streets (named Farewell because of the cemeteries that flank the street). When coming into Newport from the Newport Bridge, this is where trip to Newport will begin. The Upper Thames Street area includes Washington Square where our movie theaters are and continues to the Post Office Map.
Washington Square earned the distinction of having the largest concentration of Colonial Buildings in America. Newport RI was fortunate to have a benefactress in Doris Duke whose Restoration Foundation over the years has purchased, restored and today maintains these beautiful buildings. Long Wharf Mall and the Brick Market Place are located here.
